Used to treat a range of bacterial infections from Caecal Coccidiosis in poultry, to bacterial enteritis and bacterial respiratory infections in cattle. Sulfamethazine has been found to be a chemical suppressor of epigenetic silencing. It is a sulfonamide antibacterial which inhibits enzymatic conversion of pteridine and p-aminobenzoic acid to dihydropteric acid. Also inhibits dihydrofolate reductase.
