Benfotiamine is a synthetic S-acyl derivative of thiamine (vitamin B1). As well as being marketed as a medicine, it is also used as an antioxidant dietary supplement. It has been found to inhibit the hexosamine pathway, the advanced glycation end product (AGE) formation pathway and the diacylglycerol (DAG)-protein kinase C pathway, in addition to NF-kappaB activation, and maybe beneficial in the treatment of diabetic complications.
