Ciclopirox is used in treatment for onychomycosis of fingernails and toenails due to Trichophyton rubrum. Action is thought to be through chelation of polyvalent metal cations, such as Fe3+ and Al3+ which inhibit cytochromes for example. Ref: Drugs. 1985; 29 (4), 330-341.
