Bio Chemical Notes
Ganciclovir is used for treatment of cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis in immunocompromised patients, including patients with AIDS. A prodrug that is converted to the active form of ganciclovir triphosphate firstly by a virus-encoded cellular enzyme, thymidine kinase (TK) and then by other cellular enzymes. This inhibits viral DNA polymerase by competitively blocking dATP leading to the formation of 'faulty' DNA. Ref: Drugs. 1990; 39 (4), 597-638.
